EMDR and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) are two different therapeutic approaches, but they can work beautifully together.

EMDR helps clients process experiences that continue to feel emotionally or physically “stuck.” It can help reduce the intensity of traumatic memories, triggers, negative beliefs, and the emotional and physiological responses connected to past experiences.

ACT focuses on helping clients develop psychological flexibility—the ability to experience difficult thoughts and emotions without allowing them to control their behavior. ACT helps clients practice acceptance, step back from unhelpful thoughts, clarify their values, and take meaningful action.

When combined, EMDR and ACT can address both what has happened in a person's past and how they want to live in the present.

EMDR may help a client process: • Traumatic or distressing memories• Experiences that continue to trigger strong emotional responses• Negative beliefs about themselves• Unresolved emotional experiences• Body-based responses connected to past experiences

ACT may help a client: • Make room for difficult emotions• Notice thoughts without automatically believing or following them• Reduce avoidance• Identify what matters most• Increase psychological flexibility• Take values-based action even when discomfort is present

The goal isn't simply to eliminate uncomfortable thoughts or feelings.

The goal is to help clients become less controlled by their past experiences, less entangled with unhelpful thoughts, and more able to choose actions that reflect the person they want to be.

EMDR can help address what happened. ACT can help explore how you want to respond now. Together, they can support a deeper process of healing, flexibility, and values-directed living.

Healing isn't about erasing your past. It's about changing your relationship with it so you have more freedom to move toward the life that matters to you.
